Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub's Waffle Battered Chicken Sandwich: 50 Favorite Dishes, no.49
It's the sandwich that ate lunch
As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2013, coming April 17, the Hot Dish is serving up 50 of our favorite local dishes.
It's giggle inducing, this mammoth sandwich of dubious origin. Honestly, who would look at a skinless, boneless chicken breast and think: You know, I could go for a waffle? Or a beer .... Thankfully, the people behind south Minneapolis's new Northbound Smokehouse brewpub did. Someone was just crazy enough to combine all three.
Once the chuckles subside, Northbound Smokehouse's waffle battered chicken sandwich is a beauty to behold. It's massive, deep, and golden, like a perfectly poured India Pale Ale. The savory-sweet crust shatters at first bite, as your teeth tear into tender, juicy chicken. Crash through another arm of fried coating and taste that carnival-crusty waffle batter, just a bit bready beneath the surface, with a little sweetness before that trace taste of hoppy beer. Served on an egg bun with a lily-gilding swipe of garlic-spiked mayo, this is the sort of sandwich you clear your calendar for -- all your meals for the day are taken care of.
