National Whiskey Sour Day cocktail recipe: Dizzy Sour

A most joyous National Whiskey Sour Day to you.

A most joyous National Whiskey Sour Day to you.

Are you feeling the power of the Whiskey Sour? You should, because it's National Whiskey Sour Day. Although there seems to be controversy whether this holiday actually falls on August 25, let's celebrate today!

While many of you might find plain old whiskey with sour mix quite all right, we taste-tested this extra special recipe.

Dizzy Sour

1 1/2 ounces whiskey

1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice

1/4 tsp. Benedictine*

1 tsp. superfine sugar

1/2 ounce dark rum

fresh egg white (optional)

fresh fruit or herb garnish (optional)

Combine all ingredients except rum in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously with ice for at least a minute if you are using egg white--this will create a nice froth. Strain into an ice-filled glass. Float the rum (slowly pour over the back of a spoon into the cocktail so it stays on top) and garnish.

*Benedictine is a sweet herbal liqueur. Farnigoule or yellow Chartreuse would be decent substitutes.
