Grand Cafe has never been just about the food, though the food is as lovely as the rest of it. Owner, dame, tastemaker Mary Hunter selects every demitasse spoon, every teacup, every sideboard with the care and devotion she would if selecting for her own home. Which is why, when you sit down to eat on a wooden chair with a patina that cradles your cheeks as if you've been sitting there forever, you swivel around and think: "I could live here."
Well the bad news is, you can't move in. The good news is, Mary is at it again, adding the personal midas touch that makes the Grand more than just a restaurant. On Tuesday, August 4 (National Night Out), they'll be screening two silent films, featuring Felix the Cat and Buster Keaton, behind the restaurant at sundown to the accompaniment of live piano by composer Karen Pieper.
What's this, Paris, France? New Orleans? A dream you once had? No, it's just your friendly south Minneapolis neighborhood cafe, doing what it does best — creating emotion, memories, and an evocative feeling you won't soon forget.
Oh, and because they are indeed a restaurant, of course there will be food. The full menu will be available, as well as lovely roasty things coming off the grill, as well as a neighborhood potluck. And you know because they live next to the Grand, these neighbors just got to have good taste.
See you at the Grand.
