Minneapolis bakeries named among the nation's 50 best

Flour and fat and favorable reviews. That's what it's all about for the two Minneapolis bakeries recently featured on the Daily Meal's list of the 50 Best Bakeries in America.  

Like most food and cooking blogs, the Daily Meal site is currently flooded with tips on carving turkey and threads of commenters fighting about the "right" way to make stuffing, but last week they took a brief break from their Thanksgiving coverage to bring us an important report on the best places for pastries in the country.

The list covers everything from high-end patisseries to casual cafes, noting that a perfectly flaky croissant is a pretty good indicator of the overall quality of the pastries any given place. That test certainly holds true for the two Minneapolis bakeries that managed to snag spots on this list.

Kingfield's Patisserie 46 landed smack dab in the middle of the list, taking the number 26 slot right on the heels of Thomas Keller's Bouchon. Daily Meal noted its Mont Blanc chestnut tart and signature naturally leavened baguette as high points, and declared un-baked treats like the fleur de sel caramels to be the proverbial icing on the cake. 

Michelle Gayer's Salty Tart ranks 7 on the list, thanks to her heavenly vanilla cream-filled brioche rolls, coconut macaroons (a.k.a crack-aroons), cupcakes, and tarts. Salty's savory items were also mentioned, including the awesome cheddar jalapeño bread and twice-baked ham and cheese croissants.

San Francisco's Tartine Bakery, owned and operated by James Beard Award-winning chefs Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson, topped the Daily Meal's list.
