Midtown Global Market's Winter in the City event warms frigid foodies
Remember summer? That fabled time when the weekend brought long, languid ambles through the Mill City Farmers Market, full of food samples, chef demos, and throngs of fellow food lovers picking through the freshest seasonal produce? If your memory of such times, like the thyme struggling to stay alive in your sunniest window, is growing dimmer by the day, hie thee to Midtown Global Market this Sunday. The market is offering a series of events on the last Sunday of January, February, and March designed to "help Twin Cities residents embrace and enjoy the coldest months of the year." Read on to see what to expect at the first event of the series this Sunday.
On January 30 the focus will be on winter foods that are in season during the dark, cold winter months. These hardy specimens will be celebrated with recipes, samples, and ingredients for guests to enjoy. The highlight of the event will be the Fourth Annual Global Soup Cook-Off, in which Midtown Global Market chefs will compete to concoct the tastiest soup using in-season, local ingredients. The lucky winner will receive the "People's Choice Award," determined by popular vote after guests have sampled the contestants' offerings. There is a $4 suggested donation for judging the soups, which will benefit Perspective's Kids Cafe, a nutritional program for at-risk or homeless youth in the Twin Cities.
Once you've wet your whistle with soup, get ready for the Culinary School "Smackdown." Grass Roots Gourmet, the Produce Exchange, Cosecha Market, and Holy Land Market & Deli will provide two teams from Le Cordon Bleu and the Arts Institute Culinary Program with four surprise ingredients, which each of the teams will use to create a single dish. A panel of judges will declare one of them the winner, but samples will be available to guests, so you can decide for yourself which you like best. Meanwhile, kids will stay entertained with fun activities provided by FriendChip Farm.
