One thing the new island-themed restaurant in Brooklyn Center--look for the massive turquoise roof at 694 & Shingle Creek Parkway--is not trying to be? Authentic. The spot puts a kitschy, Disney-like spin on the Caribbean experience, what with the thatched awnings and bamboo on the walls. The menu includes everything from chef salads to pineapple Salisbury steak, seared grouper with marinara sauce over a few cheese ravioli, and one of the most massive piles of food I've ever seen for $8, the pulled jerk chicken on a pile of mashed potatoes, white bread, and gravy. In other words, if you're looking for a candy-colored vodka drink or a slushy margarita, you're good to go. If you're looking for traditional Caribbean fare, look elsewhere.
