Has Subway's Jared just lost his throne?
Kansas State University professor of human nutrition Mark Haub spent the last 10 weeks eating nothing but Hostess and Little Debbie snack cakes--interspersed with Doritos, Oreos, and sugary cereal for variety --and lost 27 pounds.[jump]
Haub's "convenience store diet" was meant to prove a thesis: that regardless of what you eat, straight-up calorie counting is all that matters. That's right: your food can be completely nutritionally void, but as long as you aren't gorging, you can lose weight.
Haub restricted himself to 1,800 calories a day (a man of his size typically ingests 2,600 calories) and usually had a dessert cake, chips, or snack every three hours. CNN offered a day-in-the-life of Haub's diet, and it included a Twinkie, a diet Mountain Dew, Cool Ranch Doritos, Corn Pops cereal, a Duncan Hines brownie, and a Zebra Cake (a serving of vegetables, a multivitamin, and Muscle Milk were Haub's only non-convenience ingestibles each day).
The results? Haub's BMI went from 28.8 (overweight) to 24.9 (normal), his body fat from 33.4 to 24.9, his cholesterol dropped 20 percent and triglycerides by 39 percent. Yet the now-svelte 174-pound professor is more confused than emboldened by his results.
"I'm not geared to say this is a good thing to do. I'm stuck in the middle. I guess that's the frustrating part. I can't give a concrete answer. There's not enough information to do that."
Prior to the Twinkie diet, Haub said he tried to eat a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fiber but fell down on the portion control part. Now that the diet is over, Haub plans to add 300 calories back to his daily consumption and is not ruling out a snack cake or two from time to time.
