Make your own mozzarella and come Unchained this Week in Food
Attempting to even enter your own kitchen when temperatures are in the 90s seems ill-advised, which is why we like to get out and explore this Week in (hot, humid) Food -- especially when it means making your own mozzarella or sucking down Deschutes brews.
7/24 Want to go vegetarian but worries about where you'll get your much-needed protein? The Wedge can answer that with "Healthy Vegetarian Proteins," a class that shows how some of the world's healthiest people build their meals around vegetable proteins like fresh black bean and corn spring rolls; hickory-smoked tofu sandwich with basil mayo; kidney bean, avocado, red pepper, and red onion salad with goat cheese; and arugula, grilled summer vegetables with fried tempeh. The class is dairy-free, gluten-free and (obviously) vegetarian, and you get to put all this food in your mouth for a class fee of $39 for members, $49 for nonmembers. Show up at 7 p.m. and enjoy two hours of veggie protein.
7/25 If "crafty beer-drinking lady" aptly describes you, then head down to the Happy Gnome Wednesday night for a special evening of beer, pampering, and goodies just for gals. Deschutes beer (Black Butte Porter, Inversion IPA and Twilight Summer Ale to name a few) will be paired with sweet treats and tasty menu items while local businesses pamper you senseless. This night of indulgence runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
If you prefer a more hands-on event, check out Mozza Mia's You Make the Mozzarella challenge. From 6 to 7 p.m. you'll learn how to make your own homemade mozzarella, perfect for pairing with the summer's bounty of tomatoes. 7/26 The seventh annual Taste of the Twin Cities Originals event takes place Thursday night at TCF Bank Stadium and promises the finest in hometown food and drink from 21 renowned local Twin Cities restaurants. The event also features an assorted drink roster that includes locally brewed craft beer tastings from Great Waters Brewing Company, Bacardi OakHeart cocktail samplings, and a tasting of more than 15 wines from around the globe. Tickets, which come with a complimentary glass of wine, are $50 apiece, and you'll be stuffing yourself for a good cause, as part of the proceeds benefit Fish Smart, a Minnesota Zoo program. 7/27 The release of Summit's Belgian Abbey Ale (#10 in the Unchained series) is happening all over town this week, and tonight at the 331 Club you can enjoy a tasty cask ale night from 9 to 11 p.m. and get a sample of this latest brew. The Club also hosts movie and music trivia tonight at 7 p.m., so buckle up and make a night of it.
