Kramarczuk's Kielbasa Festival: Sausages, pierogies, beer, and more this weekend
Kielbasa is Kramarczuk's Sausage Company's most popular meat -- so popular in fact, that they've built an annual fall festival around the smoked Polish sausage.
The long-tenured Kramarczuk's will host its annual Kielbasa Festival this weekend, September 5-6, in the parking lot at 215 East Hennepin. The festival is in its fifth year and includes a sausage recipe contest, a pierogi eating contest, live music, an impressive beer selection, and more.
The family-owned business has arranged a family-friendly event with live dancers and traditional music during the day, and special beer/sausage VIP ticket options that will appeal to childless company.
Hosting the festival in the fall each year is perfect for showcasing Oktoberfest beers, and this year's festival has a lineup that includes Pilsner Urquell, Schell's Armenius and Oktoberfest, Schneider Weisse, Tyskie Tallboys, and Crispin original cider. Last year Surly steam brewed a special batch of Dampfbier for the event. While all of the beers are picked to both represent varied beer styles and to complement the food on hand, we checked in with Nick Kramarczuk for his recommended beer/sausage pairings:
"Without hesitation, Tyskie and Kielbasa," he says, before adding, "Pilsner Urquell with the Slovakian (pilsner balances spice), Schneider Weissbier with our Viennese Foot Long, and Schell's Armenius with Saucisson Pommes de Poulet (hoppy lagers go well with roast chicken and plus I think its fruity hops would play nicely with the sweetness of the apples). [But] it's hard to go wrong with any combination."
Last year Kramarczuk's sold just under 2,000 pierogies, all handmade in the store, and the record for the eating contest is 18 in three minutes.
Tickets are available for $15 general admission (includes a beer stein and one beer), $5 for under 21 or designated drivers, and $60 VIP passes with exclusive sausages and three beers included (plus a take-home stein). Admission is free for children under 5.
