Kings Wine Bar, garlic, and firemen are reasons to celebrate The Week in Food
celebrates its first birthday this month, and it's not the only one offering wine specials. This week, enjoy plentiful wine deals and dinners, as well as opportunities to learn more about permaculture, canning, and how to grow 6,000 pounds of produce in your backyard.
- Oh to be one again. Celebrate Kings Wine Bar's first birthday with events throughout the month. Tonight, listen to Rogue Valley's latest release, "The Booksellers House," and enjoy $2 off small bites, tap beer, and wines by the glass.
- Who doesn't love a play on words? Especially when it involves wine. Enjoy! restaurant in Apple Valley now hosts Wine Down Tuesdays, where you can try three to five wines for $10 between 6 and 8 p.m.
You can't escape garlic.
- Nino, Castella, and Ca Bianca. Your long lost Italian lovers? No, but almost as good: wines that made the list for an I Nonni wine tasting. - Think you can't farm your backyard? Watch Home Grown, a film about the Dervaes family who run a small, organic farm in the heart of urban Pasadena, California. On less than a quarter of an acre, the family harvests more than 6,000 pounds of produce, makes their own biofuel, and powers their computers on solar panels. - We'll take your aperitif and raise you a wine dinner, as Aperitif restaurant in Woodbury hosts Venteux Vineyards of Templeton, California. Your four-course dinner will include such specialties as Moroccan lamb loin with harissa aioli and apricot and Dijon crusted Alaskan salmon with quinoa, as well as plentiful varieties of wine. $48. - The Urban Permaculture and Nature Awareness Workshop (Friday through Sunday) is for a specialized set--those dying to discover how to get the most out of their urban watershed management and how to design a prolific micro farm within the confines of a typical city lot. - Energy drain? Replace your sugary/caffeinated foods with zoom balls (rejuvenating herbs in a base of almond butter, cashew butter, and honey.) Learn the recipe, as well as tips on sleep, insulin resistance, powdered herbs, and homeopathic remedies in "Pizzazz Class" at Seward Coop. 1 to 2:30 p.m.
- No one wants to barf up your dilly beans. Learn how to can and preserve food safely at "Yes you Can Can," a class at Cooks of Crocus Hill in Edina. You'll get canning basics and recipes to start preserving your own summer's harvest.
- Head back to Kings Wine Bar where the celebration continues with burgers, brats, and happy hour prices on beer and wine. Not to mention: free birthday cake while it lasts and live music with the Mad Ripple Marathon Hoot.
- Seven hosts a fundraiser for two local firemen injured on duty. Enjoy sushi, cocktails, and a beautiful view of downtown Minneapolis from Seven's roof deck while showing your appreciation for the MFD.
