It's Come to This: Eating Jellyfish at the Mall of America

As part of Underwater Adventures' Science Gone Mad Lab exhibit, visitors can see new zebra sharks (charmingly named Obama and McCain), design a hybrid shark species, and learn all about strange seafaring creatures including guitarfish and sawfish. More interesting, however, is what's on the menu: jellyfish. That's weird, but now for part that's downright EERIE:

More than four years ago Robert McClure of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote about scientists prophesying the human race being forced into this circumstance! According to the prophesy, as humans consume more seafood resulting in declining stocks, nations will be forced to look at jellyfish as a bounty of grub. In the piece, visionary scientist Daniel Pauly of the University of British Columbia says that culinary shifts like this are the result of unstable fisheries practices and a voracious worldwide appetite for seafood. I guess that means that Underwater Adventures is on the cutting edge of a hot, or cold, rather, dining trend. The first jellyfish tasting at Underwater Adventures is at 1:30 p.m. today. If you can't make it, don't worry. You can make your own jellyfish delight with this recipe for sesame jellyfish:

1/2 lb Prepared shredded jellyfish (I have no idea where you would find this.)

2 tsp Light soy sauce

3 tbl Sesame oil

2 tsp White rice vinegar

2 tsp sugar

3 tbl White sesame seeds, toasted

RINSE THE JELLYFISH WELL in cold running water and drain. Put it in a stainless steel bowl and cover with boiling water. Let the jellyfish sit in the water for about 15 minutes or until it is tender. Drain and continue to soak at least 6 times in several changes of cold water. Drain thoroughly and blot dry with paper towels and set aside. Mix soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar and sugar in a small bowl. Toss the jellyfish well in this sauce and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Just before serving, garnish with the sesame seeds. Serves 4 as part of a Chinese meal or 2 as a single dish.
