Is your beard worth $200? Let Tin Whiskers and the MN Lottery be the judge

Craft beer has conquered Minnesota, going from the drink of choice for flannel-clad homebrewers to the sought-after suds of the suits in TCF Stadium box seats. It’s even reaching the gambling set, as the Minnesota Lottery introduces a new kind of drinking game: a beard contest to promote the Bearded Bucks scratch ticket.

The contest is tonight at Tin Whiskers, where the finest facial hair gets $150 and another $50 worth in tickets. Non-victorious entrants will receive some sort of consolation prize (Beer? Tickets? Beard massages?). The first 100 people to arrive will also get free lottery tickets.

Don’t have a beard? Enjoy a photo opp with the Bearded Bucks branded cutout designed by Chuck U (who also decorates Indeed’s cans). The icon is a hairy and, yes, flannel-clad and huggable figure — sort of a dopey, big-eyed Gimli with his large ears and furrowed brow.

“We’re in the process of developing some new games that may appeal more directly to our female players too,” adds the lottery’s Vicki Holets, but “we hope anyone who plays will have some fun with it.”

In promotion of the new game, the lotto is hitting different taprooms and cocktail rooms across the metro this month. Having already graced LynLake and, now, Tin Whiskers, later stops are scheduled at Sisyphus, Tattersall, Fulton, and Bent. Prizes and tickets will be given away to participants at each stop and all but Fulton will include additional beard competitions. The Bearded Bucks game is expected to be available through November.
