Is MN stadium food safe? ESPN lists vendors' health inspection reports
Do sports concessionaires get distracted by big plays and slack on food safety? ESPN recently looked into stadium eats--from the health inspector's perspective and published highlights from the 2009 reports for MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL venues in the United States and Canada.
Among the odd/gross findings was an employee "scooping ice with his bare hands instead of using scoops" [Ed note: Wha? We'd like to see that...] at Jobing.com Arena, home of the Phoenix Coyotes, the discovery of phorid flies, sometimes called coffin flies, in a bottle of cognac at Denver's Pepsi Center and the fact that 100% of the vendors at the Tampa Bay Ray's Tropicana Field had critical violations. Here's how Minnesota's stadium vendors stacked up:
Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome Minnesota Vikings Vendors with critical violations: 8%
Inspection report excerpt: One location was cited for having sanitizing solution that was too weak. Solutions have to meet a certain concentration considered strong enough to kill harmful microorganisms.
Target Center Minnesota Timberwolves Vendors with critical violations: 39%
Inspection report excerpt: Inspectors cited one location with five critical violations, including a repeat violation for not cleaning a slicer to prevent cross-contamination.
Target Field Minnesota Twins Vendors with critical violations: N.A.
Inspection report excerpt: New stadium. No inspection records available at the time of request.
Xcel Energy Center Minnesota Wild Vendors with critical violations: 17%
Inspection report excerpt: Chicken strips for topping a Caesar salad were found at 105 degrees, when they should have been at least 140 degrees.
