The hits just keep on coming.
Each year Food and Wine Magazine chooses 10 chefs from 10 American cities as the finest young up-and-comers. The nomination can mean stratospheric career trajectories; nominees share the ranks with names like Daniel Boulud, April Bloomfield, Nancy Silverton, Tom Colicchio, and David Chang -- in other words, the biggest in the business. Our own Jim Christiansen of Heyday was nominated Tuesday.
The talent is chosen based on the chefs' capacity to incite, not follow, trends, as well as for creativity and skill. Over a months-long selection process, Food and Wine solicits feedback from restaurant critics, food writers, and other trusted experts around the country. The chefs must have been in charge of a kitchen for five years or fewer. The editors would have also visited all of the restaurants undercover and tested the food in order to finalize the selections.
The winners will be featured in the July issue of Food and Wine and will also showcase their talents at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen from June 19-21, where the who's who in national food gather to celebrate their King of the Hilldom.
