Most of us have seen some version of the legendary Halloween Puking Pumpkin. With eyes bulging, pumpkin seeds and gook spilling from the mouth--it's a true Hallow's Eve classic. But here at the Hot Dish, we believe that this can be taken one step further. Hence, our version that is also a festive appetizer.
Behold, the Puking Pumpkin dip server. The idea is simple; take your favorite dip--green ones are especially good--and let it flow from your pumpkin's gaping mouth. Try guacamole, french onion dip, or hummus and babaganoush for some Middle Eastern flair. Don't forget to get creative with finely chopped red peppers or other veggies, or whole fish bones and old shoes a la. Mad Magazine. Let your imagination be your guide.
If you are struggling for ideas, let us share a recipe for one of our favorite guacamole recipes, from Alton Brown:
* 3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled * 1 lime, juiced * 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt * 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin * 1/2 teaspoon cayenne * 1/2 medium onion, diced * 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced * 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro * 1 clove garlic, minced
In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.
