At precisely 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, the sacred event of Chicago-style deep dish pizza arrives in all of its drippy, cheesy grandeur to our fair city.
The name Giordano's is synonymous with real-deal Chicago-style pizza, which has its fervent devotees. In fact, according to lore, Giordano's is a direct descendant of the Italian Easter pie that was the harbinger of deep dish.
But you don't really care about all that, do you? What you want is to go headfirst into that unholy pool of cheese and marinara, and at 4 p.m. you can do just that, which may also be just the time to sample their "stuffed pizza": a top and bottom crust with cheese stuffed in between and the option of additional toppings in the middle, with sauce and Parmesan on top of the crust.
A primordial soup if there ever was one.
The opening coincides with happy hour, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday (also 10 p.m.-close Sunday-Thursday), featuring $4 domestic beer and house wines by the glass, and half-priced appetizers. The restaurant will have a full bar, and late night special of an individual six-inch stuffed pizza and a tallboy (or soft drink) is available from 10 p.m. to close, nightly.
