Gastro Non Grata and CSA selections this Week in Food
We're inching toward farmer's market season, and the proof is in this week's events: from a CSA fair at Seward Co-op to the opening of Mill City Museum's new "Growing Strong: How Farmers Markets Nourish People, Communities and the Planet" exhibit, the veggies are in the air this Week in Food.
4/17 The Happy Gnome in St. Paul hosts the boys from across the river at Fulton Brewery for an epic beer dinner. Guests can talk with the brewers about their beers and the growth of their brewery during the meet & greet at 6 p.m., then enjoy a multicourse dinner at 7 p.m. paired with Fulton brews. The whole gamut will set you back just $80, which is hopefully part of your return from finishing your taxes today.
4/19 We don't use "heartwarming" often, but we might in the case of Dirty Work: The Story of Elsie's Farm, which will be screened at the Seward Co-op Thursday at 7 p.m. The free film is a documentary by director Deb Wallwork from Minneapolis-based Redeye Video that follows a year in the life of farmers Don Roberts and Joni Cash at their western Wisconsin CSA operation, and the joys and financial pitfalls of running an organic vegetable farm. The Mill City Museum features a free public reception to open the new exhibit "Growing Strong: How Farmers Markets Nourish People, Communities and the Planet" at 7 p.m. The exhibit celebrates the many ways farmers markets serve Minnesota communities. Through a combination of photomurals and first-person storytelling, visitors will explore the importance of farmers markets both now and throughout history. Tonight Dr. Marc Manley, vice president and chief prevention officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, will deliver remarks at 8 p.m. Visitors can enjoy a cash bar and music performed by Light of the Moon.
4/20 Gastro Non Grata returns for a rare Friday show called the Pre-Earth Day Confection Carousel. Three of the most talented local pastry chefs--Dustan Pinlac of Levain, Christian Aldrich of Haute Dish and James Beard nominee Michelle Gayer of Salty Tart--will deliver an unbelievable sugar rush through various decadent desserts. Each sweet course will be paired with a sample of the bubbly brown stuff from Lagunitas Brewery, and Cactus Blossom and Heavy Deeds will provide the musical entertainment. Doors are at 8:30 and the show starts at 9:30 at the Triple Rock Social Club, where tickets are $8 in advance and $12 at the door.
4/21 Kicking around the idea of a CSA this summer? Then head to Seward Co-op's 11th Annual CSA Fair to meet local farmers, learn about CSAs and hook yourself up with a subscription of your own. The fair runs 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and is the perfect opportunity for folks to choose the right share for themselves or their family.
