Almost a year ago, we reported on a soul food restaurant that was supposed to be "coming soon" to the historic Thorp Building at 1620 Central Ave. NE, and then. . . nada.
But we recently got an update from the people of Funky Grits, and they're still here. No longer eyeing Northeast, they're negotiating a space in Uptown, which they promise is "way worth" the wait.
And in the meantime, they're popping up at Hazel's Northeast on Sunday, July 31.
They'll be serving two, five-course menus, one for meat-eaters and one for vegans (great news for soul food lovers who don't love pork). The menus will offer a sneak peek of what's in store at the Funky Grits brick-and-mortar joint: "corn puppies," hushpuppy battered pork belly with apple jam; Hoppin' John sliders; and pecan pie tartlets.
In keeping with their original motif, music will be a major component of their restaurant. DJ Sadie Soul will spin rare funk and soul 45's.
The pop-up will offer two seatings. Tickets are $50 and include two beers or glasses of wine per person. Register here.
