Learn to make your own chicken pho at Mississippi Market
This Week in Food begins with pho and ends with pie, the ideal bookends to the final week in September.
9/27 Mississippi Market offers the chance to meander through Southeast Asian cooking in an entirely gluten-free fashion at Thursday night's class "Cooking Southeast Asian Flavors." The distinct flavors of the region will make up a menu that includes spicy Thai noodles, gado gado (Malaysian veggie salad with peanut sauce), and Vietnamese chicken pho. And yes, you get to taste it all when you're through. The class costs $20 for nonmembers and $17 for members and runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
9/29 Oktoberfest in September? You bet. And there's no better place to celebrate the city's brewing past than the Mill City Museum and Mill City Farmer's Market, which are teaming up for plenty of activities, tastings, and entertainment just to honor beer. J.D. Fratzke of the Strip Club restaurant will provide a cooking demo in the Outdoor Café Kitchen and a baking demonstration of Central European baked goods in the Baking Lab, and Elk River German Band, the Jolly Huntsmen Band, and the S.G. Edelweiss Dancers add to the atmosphere. Visitors can relax with a Minnesota brew and heaps of German fare in the Ruin Courtyard beer garden to cap it off. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is entirely free.
Saturday is also a great time to dive into a new class, and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is offering "Roots of Flavor" from 9 to 11 a.m. Fall is the time to indulge in root veggies, and this class will focus on how to get the most from these seasonal gems. The menu will include roasted roots salad made with local, seasonal ingredients; jicama orange with local honey vinaigrette; wild rice and roasted root vegetables; and roasted beet and butternut squash salad with bacon and candied pepitas. The class will set you back $35 if you're a member, $45 if you're not, and reservations can be made by calling 952.443.1422.
9/30 This is exactly the kind of research we're on board with: The Twin Cities Pie Experiment takes place Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Fine Line Music Cafe. Anyone can compete, attend, or win, and pies will range from the savory to the sweet (slap it in a crust and it qualifies). Judges include WCCO's Jason DeRusha, the Star Tribune's Kim Ode, Patisserie 46's John Kraus, and Corner Table owner Thomas Boemer. Attendees will get to sample until they burst while participants vie for glory. Tickets cost just $10 and can be gotten here.
