Five deals to help you party like it’s a leap year

Celebrate your leap year birthday with a pile of spaghetti and meatballs from Buca.

Celebrate your leap year birthday with a pile of spaghetti and meatballs from Buca.

Pity the leap year babies. They only get to celebrate their true birthday every four years. And in between they have to smile every time someone thinks they’re being incredibly witty by asking a 32-year-old born on February 29, “does that mean you’re really only 8?”

So they’ve earned the right to party when leap year rolls around, which it does this Monday, adding an extra day of merrymaking to the calendar. Celebrate with these food and drink deals; some are for leaplings only, some are equal opportunity. And yes, leapling is a word.

  1. At Buca di Beppo, a February 29 birthday snags you a complimentary meal of the restaurant’s signature meatballs and spaghetti at any of the five metro locations. You’ll need to show your driver’s license to prove you’re legit. This deal started yesterday and goes through Monday. Bucadibeppo.com

  2. Hard Rock Café is also offering a free meal to leapers. Again, it’s a word. Head over to Mall of America on Monday and choose from a special menu of leap year deals, including the restaurant’s Legendary Burger, mac and cheese, and grilled Caesar salad. You’ll need a valid I.D. showing your birthday to qualify. Hardrock.com

  3. So you're not one of the 200,000 or so leap year babies in the United States? No worries, there are plenty of celebrations open to all. On Monday night, Herkimer is working its way through the Champagne stash that didn’t get consumed over the recent holiday season by offering all-you-can-drink bubbly for $15. The party starts at 6 p.m. and goes until supplies run out. Theherkimer.com

  4. While technically not a leap year event since it happens every week, Makeshift Monday at Coup d’Etat has food and drink specials that make celebrating easy on the wallet. Bartenders take over the kitchen and whip up their favorite bar food, like cheeseburger sliders, sticky wings, and tater tots. All food is $5 from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., with $3 drink specials that include house wine, rail drinks, and local beers. Coupdetatmpls.com

  5. Monday is your chance to try organic and biodynamic Frog’s Leap wine (leap, get it?) at a discount. Wise Acre Eatery is featuring a glass of the winery’s Chardonnay for $9. Blue Plate Restaurants, including the Lowry, Scusi, and Edina Grill, will have a buy one, get one deal on Frog’s Leap Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. wiseacreeatery.com; blueplaterestaurantco.com
