Eight simple words:
"Good music lives here. So does great beer."
It's a mission statement and the simple idea behind the new limited beer from 89.3 the Current and August Schell's Brewery in New Ulm. The Current beer is set for release in bars and liquor stores on May 16 and is a joint effort between the MPR-owned local radio station and the second oldest family brewery in the United States. While pairing radio and beer may not seem an obvious choice, both are deeply invested in the local community and they see the collaboration as a way to highlight their mutual appreciation of the arts.
The beer is a kolsch-style ale, light in color and lager-like in definition. It carries a light malt flavor with a sweet aroma of hops and is crisp and easy-drinking, with 25 IBUs, 4.75 ABV. The beer is categorized as Schell's Zommerfest, intended for summer music festivals and backyard cookouts, and the 16-ounce can is perfect for both settings. The artwork features mixed imagery from the two worlds of radio broadcast and industrial brewing.
The pairing with the Current is not in name only. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the beer will benefit the radio station and its mission to serve the Minnesota music scene. Not only that, but the beer comes with download options to check out songs from local artists Frankie Lee, Har Mar Superstar, Cactus Blossoms, Actual Wolf, the 4onthefloor, and Caroline Smith. On the can is a link to visit and grab tracks from these varied and established Minnesota artists.
