Feast for the Eyes: Food & Wine Film Festival begins Thursday

Food and film lovers in the Twin Cities will unite this week for Feast for the Eyes: A Food & Wine Film Festival, which runs October 25-28 at St. Anthony Main Theatre in Minneapolis.

The culture, art, and science of food and wine from around the world will be celebrated during the four-day extravaganza, with audiences being treated to documentaries, shorts, and full feature films about food, plus tastings from local food and drink purveyors, such as Barbette, Surdyk's, Rusty Taco, Birdhouse, Zen Box Izakaya, and Masu Sushi and Robata, among others.

The festival begins this Thursday, October 25, with an opening-night feast featuring a selection of food and drink inspired by the two films kicking off the festival, the well-known foodie flick Big Night and a documentary called Mugaritz BSO, about an unusual collaboration between musician Felipe Ugarte and the chef of Spain's Mugaritz, considered one of the best restaurants in the world. Tickets include a 2 Ginger's Big Ginger, a beer from local newbies Indeed Brewing, and all the food you can eat before and after your film, courtesy of Aster Cafe.

Other movies in the fest include Babette's Feast, Eat Drink Man Woman, and Ratatouille, plus lesser-known films such as Three Stars, a documentary about the daunting responsibilities of chefs at three-star restaurants, and Now, Forager, about a couple who hunt wild mushrooms and sell them to New York restaurants. On Friday night, Vita.mn magazine will present the Small Bites Feastival, a dinner and shorts program. Attendees will nibble small bites from Barbette, Zen Box Izakaya, Rusty Taco, Devil's Advocate, Birdhouse on Hennepin, and Mort's Deli before watching 66 minutes of shorts with tantalizing titles like Mickles Pickles, Foraging Sutro Baths, and Murder Mouth.

If brunch is more your thing, Sunday's brunch and shorts program replicates Friday's format but with films and food pairings appropriate for a morning crowd. From 11 a.m., French Meadow Bakery & Cafe, Nicollet Island Inn, Rustica Bakery, Mojo Monkey Donuts, and Peace Coffee will provide the small bites, while shorts include titles like The Benevolent Baker: Donuts, Look to the Cookie, The Benevolent Butcher: Bacon, and Side Saddle Vegan Bakery. Our mouths are watering.

Both shorts programs take place at St. Anthony Main Theatre and the festival tent outside Aster Cafe.
