Rum King isn’t just a nod to the rum barrel Indeed uses to age this boozy imperial stout, it’s a declaration of power and birthright. Rum King is a dominant beer: bold and direct, yet nuanced and deceptively gentle.

The beer itself is black as night and intoxicating at 10.5 percent ABV. It sips smooth and easy, with a delightful creaminess, and the finish is clean. It has hints of raisin, dark fruits, bitter chocolate, and sweet molasses. Combine those varied forces with a spiced rum bouquet and the warming sensation of a high ABV beer, and it’s a doozy. You'll have to stop yourself before you wobble off a bar stool, realizing that two of these royal drinks is the alcohol equivalent of four measly pale ales.

Rum King is so rich and smooth that, like fine desserts, it’s easy to overindulge. As such, this beer is best reserved for special occasions: seated at that throne, next to that fireplace (or space heater), and with good company.
