The Halftime Rec boasts “Traditional Irish Fare,” but we’re not sure how traditionally Irish jalapeños and cilantro are. And we don’t care.

When the ninth beer settles into your gut, nothing can staunch the foreboding that you’ve just done something unfortunate like eating a pile of starch.

These crisp-tender fried potatoes come cloaked in a beer-cheese sauce that coats like patent leather. Glossy and almost suspiciously smooth, it eats like something appealingly artificial and junky.

In an eye-opening curveball, all of this richness gets a foil of seriously spicy, chile-laced pesto. And to prove they’re sincere about the heat, little coins of raw jalapeño dot it all like a dare.

Traditional, no. Awesome, yes.
