89: Chaksuka from Shish

Chaksuka: my mom's is the best and your mom's is shit.

Chaksuka: my mom's is the best and your mom's is shit.

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2016, coming April 20, we're serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes. Here are the best dishes, drinks, snacks, and sweet treats we encountered over the last year.

Every culture, every grandmother, and every son wants to claim heritage and ownership over this dish, like dumplings, tamales and fruit pies. Everybody's mom's is the best, and every one that isn't mom's is shit. But because our mom didn't make it, we turn to Shish.

Eggs poached in a heady sofrito of tomato, chile, slow-cooked onion and spices is the sort of thing to eat at all times— because it's raining, because it's morning, because it's the middle of the night you only left the bar when the ugly lights were officially on and you need a good bit of steadying.

At Shish it's served with breakfast potatoes, pita, and enough fruit and veg to make you wonder: Hey, maybe it is my mom, looking after my good health and well being, after all.
