We never really could get on board with those clamshell-packaged caramel apples on a stick. The caramel's too hard and who knows how many millennia ago that apple was picked? But put these same ingredients--sliced granny smith, a drizzle of melted caramel--on French toast and, well, we'll have what she's having! We like the ones at Hot Plate, Nokomis's favorite breakfast spot with the kitschy retro decor and paint-by-number art on the walls. The tart acid of the apple cuts the sweetness just enough that you'll still have enough sugar tolerance for one of co-owner Sam Beberg's famous home-made Oreo sandwich cookies, called Sam-oes.
