100: Caramel-Bacon Puffcorn at Red Cow


Caramel-bacon puffcorn is the perfect start to your meal — or let's be honest, maybe it is your meal.

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2016, coming April 20, we're serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes. Here are the best dishes, drinks, snacks, and sweet treats we encountered over the last year.

Sweet, salty, crunchy and comforting – the caramel-bacon puffcorn at Red Cow covers all the bar snack basics. The puffcorn will remind you of the Corn Pops cereal you ate as a kid — or as a grownup; we won’t judge. It’s airy and crisp at the same time and kind of melts on your tongue. And then it’s coated in a buttery caramel coating that gives it the look of burnished lacquer and provides a nice crackly candy shell.

But wait, there’s more. They add bacon! Unearth little gems of cubed porky goodness in every handful on your way to the bottom of the bowl.

The popcorn pairs perfectly with beer, which works out well since Red Cow has one of the best set of taps in town. But beware, these tasty morsels could easily sneak up on your appetite before your burger arrives, so try to exercise some restraint. We know it’s hard.

Red Cow has three locations, the original in South Minneapolis, the North Loop, and Selby Ave. in St. Paul. They all get busy, packed with folks from the neighborhood(s) looking to enjoy a good burger and maybe find a new favorite beer. But there’s an upside to waiting for a table: Sometimes, if you’re lucky, they pass around free servings of the caramel-bacon puffcorn to the waiting hordes.
