Erik Anderson, from Minneapolis to Food & Wine Best New Chef

He once was ours. Erik Anderson, who until this time last year was the head chef at Sea Change, has gone on to be named one of Food and Wine's Best New Chefs. Anderson had run the kitchen at Sea Change under Tim McKee. Before that he had worked at Doug Flicker's Auriga.

Anderson had come to the Twin Cities from Chicago, where he had been a road manager for Alkaline Trio. But his food career took a rock 'n' roll trajectory, from great Minneapolis kitchens to a stage at Noma (arguably the most famous restaurant in the world now that El Bulli has gone dark) before landing in Nashville, where he teamed up with another ex-Minneapolis chef to open their own restaurant.

Catbird Seat is the work of Anderson and Josh Habiger (with whom he shares the award).  Habiger and Anderson had met while working at Auriga. Habiger went on to work at the much-lauded Alinea and Aviary under Grant Achatz.

From the moment the two opened Catbird Seat, the acclaim has rolled in. They were recognized in the semifinal round of the James Beard Awards as one of the best new restaurants. Other accolades have come from Bon Appetit, GQ, CNN and Fox News. All agree it's one of the best restaurants of the last year and one of the hardest to secure a reservation.

And while they may not be hometown guys anymore, we can say we knew him when he was just the crazy talented chef at one of our restaurants.  Now we've got to share him with the world.
