Drink of the Week: Pimm's Cup at Merlin's Rest
Are you familiar with Pimm's No. 1 Cup? This centuries-old liqueur has some lesser known cousins (the No. 3 and the No. 6) that are still in production, but the most popular by far is the No. 1. It's a cola-colored, gin-based liqueur that is faintly herby and is set off perfectly when mixed with citrus flavors.
It's an ideal time of year to get into Pimm's No. 1 Cup if you've never tried it before. We know a handful of local bars that make slow-sipping, patio-worthy drinks with it, including Brit's Pub (though we personally like its Bootleggers even better) and the pared-down version at the Craftsman, but Longfellow neighborhood bar Merlin's Rest is our current favorite.
Just like marshmallows in a campfire or the pronunciation of the word gyro, the "proper" way of making a Pimm's Cup often sparks debate. In America, a Pimm's Cup is typically made with a mixture of lemonade or sour mix and ginger ale or 7-Up and garnished with, at the very least, a cucumber. Merlin's is much more generous with the garnishes, and the combination is both super refreshing and more typical of a Pimm's Cup you might get in the British Isles.
