$8.00 [$5.00 at happy hour]
80 S. 9th St., Minneapolis
As you descend the stairs into the basement of the new Hell's Kitchen, you feel part of a secret club. With the brick walls, swanky decor and cutting-edge artwork, there is a feeling of decadence down in this hideout.
Ideal to make this decent after a long day at the office or for their popular Sunday brunch. I was drawn in by their happy hour menu--many a creative cocktail at a nice discount is to be found [along with great deals on apps like mussels in white wine and adobo sauce, mini crab cakes, and sweet potato fries]. The decision was hard, but I went with the Gonzo Manhattan, named for Gonzo artist Ralph Steadman. Made with bourbon and fresh fruit compote, a Gonzo Manhattan is strong enough to warm your toes, but the clever addition of fruit compote makes this drink interesting, smooth and non-intimidating.
Happy hour is 3-6p, seven days a week, and all evening long on Sundays.
