Hot Dish went back to school to explore Downtime's happy hour vibe. Is it worth the difficult parking or bus trip to make it to this University area hang?
An unassuming place nestled between several U of M buildings, the Downtime Bar & Grill has a low-key atmosphere humming with conversation when it's not hosting live music. No fear of overwrought college party drama here, as the place sees both students and faculty relaxing over tasty brews and discussing subjects high and low. Though they have a full bar and good but basic bar-ish food that is cheerfully served, the real star here is the draft beer selection--Deschutes, LeftHand, Tyranena, Great Lakes, Rush River, Odell's, Bell's, and even a respectable pumpkin beer (hard to believe, we know) are all represented.
Downtime's happy hour is 4-8 p.m. daily, so it's long and often. We love that. And, the environment is warm, friendly, and not too-cool-for-school. While we were in the house, the two dudes bartending talked about the live music scene and their newborn babies (each had a kid at home that was born in the last year) pretty interchangeably. Very chill. Lastly, the draft microbrew choices for $3 are awesome. Feeling stoutly? You're covered. Need a Bitter Woman IPA? You're in luck. And, if your pocket's a little empty, you can always have a PBR for $2. Parking is way tough, though. Take the 6, 2 or 3 bus to this Dinkytown spot and you'll have a much happier happy hour.
