It won't be quite the first new grocery store in the nation to do so, as Cub claims, but it does seem to be the first mainstream supermarket to go for the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) label.
The almost-finished store at 1177 Clarence Street (near Phalen Boulevard) will join the ranks of a Whole Foods in Duluth and natural-foods groceries in Redmond, Washington, and Columbus, Ohio (the last in the same "new construction" category as the St. Paul Cub), that have received the Gold certification.
Though Cub isn't quite the first to get there, it's nice to see the East Side near the forefront of something for a change. Much of the store's construction waste was recycled, as were some of its new building materials, and the flooring is made to reduce the amount of chemicals needed to clean it. Lauren Connelly of the U.S. BGC says that there is no exact schedule for awarding the certification after a building's completion; the timing depends on volume and other variables, so it's not clear when we'll know for sure whether Cub got it.
Among other new design features are skylights, which could contribute to a more pleasant shopping experience as well as reduced lighting costs. Now neighborhood residents have another reason to look forward to the new Cub, in addition to no longer having to patronize the dirty, poorly stocked, understaffed Rainbow nearby--until this new store falls into the same state in approximately two years. At least it'll still be saving energy.
