Do you think deep dish pizza is just so many pools of sauce and cheese coagulating in a bread bowl? Do you think it is the holy nirvana pinnacle of eating and that it deserves a place in the catalog of Real and Good Pizza Tradition? Well, it doesn't matter what you think! Because either way, Giordano's Chicago-style deep dish pizza is coming to Minneapolis, just in time for swimsuit season.

The restaurant will be located at 2700 Hennepin Avenue in a new retail space where a raggedy old gas station used to stand. It is slated to open in June.
The good news: If you don't already know it, Giordano's seems to have some real-deal roots to it. Legend has it that the recipe was originally cooked up in the wily mind of one Mama Giordano in some little Italian town. But this being a time before deep dish would have been a thing, she only made this around Easter time: a double-crusted, cheese-stuffed variation of the pizza.
We kind of believe it, if you've ever seen one of these, you know what Italian grandmothers are capable of when special occasions and the kitchen come together. But whatever; we like our pizza folklore like we like our fish stories -- entertaining and mostly believable.
In any case, this pizza has a strong following, it's received many accolades, and perhaps more importantly, it has a top and bottom crust with cheese stuffed in between and the option of additional toppings in the middle such as pepperoni, Italian sausage, and spinach. Sauce and more cheese are piled on top.
And it seems like the company is taking a chance on Minneapolis -- their only other pizzerias outside of Chicago are in Florida. The Minneapple is becoming quite the little pizza town.
