City Pages Beer Fest, Triple Rock bacon bargain: The Week in Food

It's festival week! Pay homage to the state's dietary staples: rhubarb, beer, and dairy products. Enjoy free bacon and set your sights on making the world's largest meatball. God bless a Minnesota summer.

Tuesday 6/1

  • Did you know? The record for the World's Largest Meatball was set three times in 2009: first in Mexico with a 109-pound meatball; then in Los Angeles on the Jimmy Kimmel Show with a 198.6-pound meatball; and finally at an Italian restaurant in Concord, New Hampshire, with a 222.5-pound meatball. Aspire to a new record at "Classic Italian Meatballs," a class at Jefferson High School. Advanced registration required. $28. 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday 6/2

  • There's nothing more badass than making homemade bread--except if it's homemade Indian flatbread. Be impressive. Learn how to make roti, parathas, poori, naan, and several chutneys at "Flatbreads of India" at the Wedge. $15 ($12 for members). 7 to 9 p.m.

  • Bacon makes everything better. Get some free at Triple Rock's Free Bacon Wednesdays. Wash it down with a $3 PBR Tallboy. Now that's what we call living.

Thursday 6/3

  • Landlocked nothin'--we can have a clambake if we want to. Learn how at "Minnesota Clambake," a class at the Chef's Gallery in Stillwater. Clambake expert Suzanne Schilling will demonstrate traditional recipes, including corn-on-the-cob, lobster, clams, mussels, Spanish chorizo, and more. $70. 6 p.m.

  • Bring a little color to your cheeks with a Rosé wine tasting at Sinful Wines and Spirits in Bloomington. Sample sweet and sassy varieties. Reservations required: 952-888-WINE. 7 p.m.

Friday 6/4

  • OK, maybe the most badass thing would be if your name was Cat Cora and you were the first female chef to be featured on Iron Chef America. Meet the culinary celebrity and 2006 Executive Chef of Bon Appétit at the Mall of America where she'll sign copies of her new book, Cat Cora's Classics with a Twist. 6 p.m.

Saturday 6/5

  • Take a road trip to Lanesboro, Minnesota, for its annual Rhubarb Festival--a celebration of the state's favorite vegetable (or at least the one vegetable most of us can get to grow). Taste rhubarb delights, participate in the Rhubarb Olympics, and get your rant on in the Rhubarb Rant Speaker's Corner. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Its all Belgians all the time at Acadia Café's Battle of the Belg. Compare real Belgian-brewed beers to those brewed in the U.S., Canada, and Norway. Try a $10 sampler (4, 4 oz pours) or a full glass for $5.50 to $8. 4 to 9 p.m.

  • City Pages' 18th annual Beer Fest: the 10th and Hennepin Theater District, a wide variety of domestic and imported beer, and live music--guaranteed people-watching at its finest. $26 advance tickets available at select MGM locations and online at $30 tickets available at the door; $8 for designated drivers. 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sunday 6/6

  • Don't miss the kick-off to Willmar Dairy Days, a weeklong celebration of the dairy industry. Enjoy live music, an ice-cream social, a cattle show, and a visit to a dairy farm. Test your gut with a milk run! Through June 11.

Monday 6/7

  • There's nothing we crave more on a Monday than a few glasses of wine. Join Sommelier Tim Edmunds at Crave Restaurant in the Mall of America as he highlights wines from Tuscany. $45. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
