Chatterbox Pub supplies fun and games, but can the kitchen deliver?

The second I walked into Chatterbox Pub I knew they had embraced the "Grandmother's Basement" look. All of the furniture had a middle-class 1980s feel, and the dining room is peppered with little nooks filled with your favorite old-school board games and gaming systems, including Atari and the original Nintendo. Makes for an interesting setting, but is the food any good?

We quickly grabbed the board game version of "Would Your Rather?" and assembled the contents before focusing on the menu. It seemed like a great night for a grilled cheese ($6.95) and a beer, so I placed my order and quickly started questioning my companion about all things ridiculous. Usually the wait for food seems to last forever, but all the great games at Chatterbox made the time breeze by.

It seemed like only a few questions before my grilled cheese arrived. Instead of a basic sandwich loaf, they brush house-made focaccia with oil in preparation for the grill. I always appreciate a bit of a twist, so I was excited for the cilantro pumpkin-seed pesto and fresh tomato that accompanied both whole milk mozzarella and cheddar cheese. The sandwich was nicely grilled, but the bread had adopted an undercooked, frozen pizza consistency. Instead of cheese slices, the cheese was shredded and melted nicely, creating long cheese trails with every bite. The shredded approach allowed the sauce to integrate with ease, but unfortunately, the much-anticipated pesto was more like a standard basil pesto sauce that wasn't anything to write home about.

Sandwich Rating: Hey, It's Nourishment. I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed this sandwich. It was flat and uninspired despite the promise on the menu. But I did have a great time navigating through the game with my companion, which made for much better conversation than dining.
