Bon Vie relocates to A Piece of Cake Bakery

St. Paul's little breakfast and lunch cafe known for its eggs Benedict and Mexican-style chorizo dishes has picked up and moved down the street. When Mary Zahasky discovered that the building would not be renewing her lease at the old location, she didn't have to look far for a new space.

Zahasky also owns A Piece of Cake Bakery that was located walking distance from the original Bon Vie.  

Neighbors in the surrounding Cathedral Hill neighborhood were happy to see their favorite brunch spot stick around.

We stopped by for a look at the new digs, and the bakery's sweets case is still lit up with adorable,swirly cupcakes, black and white cookies, monkey bread, and more.  

The tables fit right in as if they'd always been there. Compared to the original Bon Vie, the new place feels a little more spacious. Diners won't have to worry about bumping elbows with their neighbors anymore.

The food also remains the same. The migas (scrambled eggs over tortilla chips) and Mexican omelet still have the cinnamon-spiked chorizo, the bacon is extra crispy, and the daily quiche comes in an ultra-buttery crust. All arrive with prices that are a little steep for what we're getting. A slice of the quiche with a side salad will run you $10.50, and a mess of migas also rings up over $10 dollars.

Portions are filling but not obscene. You will have to save a little space for one of the bakery treats that beckon by the door.

Easy neighborhood eating, but not a destination.
