French Meadow has been generating a lot of news of late. The bakery and cafe recently announced plans to open a new outpost of their store in the former Coffee News space on Grand Avenue and purchased the CC Club parking lot as part of an expansion plan for their Uptown location. In addition to putting in 80 extra seats in the restaurant's old baking area, French Meadow also started constructing a wine bar on the side of the cafe building called Bluestem Bar & Table. Next week, that wine bar will open its doors, despite their original estimate of a January opening date.

Bluestem will have a separate entrance off of Lyndale Avenue and will serve wines by the glass and bottle as well as select beers. As far as the story behind the name, French Meadow offers this explanation on their Facebook page:

French meadow has been working closely with authors Lansing Shepard and Paula Westmoreland of This Perennial Land, who inspired the name of Bluestem Bar & Table, French Meadow's new venue in the space behind the original cafe. Bluestem is the dominant native grass species of the Midwestern tall grass prairie, and is used in restoration areas for erosion control and more. We feel the name describes our intention to inform our guests on the third world crops, blue earth and restorative agriculture through our cafe platform and the organic farm to table foods we have served for over 25 years.

Bluestem will open Monday, June 17. The bar features 75 sustainable, organic and biodynamic wines as well as sixteen local and national tap beers with around 40 more in bottles. The setting is more upscale than the cafe area, but will serve food with a similar farm to table philosophy.
