Black Forest Inn's Spargelfest: deep-fried asparagus
Some spears are made for scarfing, but not this dainty appetizer from the Black Forest Inn: puff pastry- and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, deep-fried. To compare it to last week's deep-fried asparagus contenders, we took knife and fork to the appetizer, as funny as it felt to use silverware with a dish that is essentially pigs in a blanket (granted, prosciutto is a pretty fancy substitute for a hot dog). The dish is available through May 30, when the Black Forest Inn wraps up its asparagus celebration, Spargelfest.
Pitted against last week's contestants, Town Talk Diner and Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge, we liked how the Black Forest Inn played with its dish, using puff pastry instead of batter and slipping in some palatte-tempting pork. Plus, leaving the asparagus tips exposed during frying lets them get a little crunchy, a tactile experience you miss when the whole spear is slathered in batter. Ultimately, though, we still preferred Town Talk's tempura asparagus for jazzing up standard bar fare without bringing in totally new ingredients like prosciutto.
