Bill would allow WIC vouchers for organics

State Sen. Sharon Erickson Ropes (DFL-Winona) has introduced a bill that would allow Women, Infants and Children program vouchers to be used for organic foods.

The state's program currently explicitly prohibits using the vouchers for anything organic - be it infant cereal, fresh produce, eggs or what have you. Also banned from the mouths of expectant and new mothers are soy milk, parmesan cheese and -- gasp -- cheese curds.

Fortunately, the items that are presently allowed (processed American cheese excluded) aren't anything anyone would take to the streets over. No Cocoa Puffs or Little Debbies for baby (whew).

S.F. 213 passed out of the Health, Housing and Family Security Committee last week and is pending senate passage.
