Beez Kneez Honey hosts open house event tonight

To promote their official grand opening on August 26, the Beez Kneez Honey House, the Twin Cities first urban community honey house, is hosting a preview event tonight from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at their headquarters in Longfellow. The family-friendly evening includes refreshments from Verdant Tea House, turns on the Beez Kneez very own bicycle-powered honey extracting machine, and a sneak peek at what keeps the whole operation humming.

It's a pure and simple product they're peddling (or rather, pedaling, as they do their deliveries by bike): unpasteurized honey, but as Beez Kneez Honey co-owner Erin Rupp told us a few months ago, the mission of the company is really about "reviving the hive."

"Honey bees pollinate one-third of the food we eat, and they're in trouble," writes Rupp. "Beekeepers are losing 30 percent to 40 percent of their hives annually, and it's looking like this year is the worst on record. We're working to raise awareness of, and connection to, pollinators by establishing and maintaining honey bee hives in public spaces in the Twin Cities, teaching public classes in those hives, and delivering our honey to our community."

The actual house and site of tonight's event is at 2204 Minnehaha Ave. S. in Minneapolis. Learn more about what the Beez Kneez is doing and register to rent extraction and bottling service at their website
