Beer of the Week: Steel Toe's Rainmaker

This week's beer of the week is Rainmaker from Steel Toe Brewing in St. Louis Park. The beer is a double red, offering a deep amber in color with a flavor just as robust as the name and color imply. It's brewed with caramel and dark roasted malts and, per Steel Toe's website, "a torrent of hops." The general style falls somewhere between a red and an ale, smoothly blending the two styles with a heavy hop influence.
Despite its boldness, this is a beer of balance first with a touch of malty sweetness on first impression, followed by a strong yet pleasing citrus hop that lingers. The foamy medium head intensifies the aroma and helps to keep it a bit more "red" until the hops carry it away. It's smooth, filtered, clean, and easy to drink, which makes it a beer that will appeal to craft connoisseurs and taproom rookies alike.
Steel Toe is currently on tap at Muddy Pig, Black Sheep Pizza (St. Paul), Stub & Herbs, McCoy's Public House, and Pig & Fiddle, among others. Rainmaker is also available in 22-ounce bottles at local liquor stores.
