Beer, cheese, and Julia Child's 100th this Week in Food
Town Hall releases MPLS on Tuesday
It's clearly the summer of beer, or so our events list would suggest: Town Hall releases its latest brew, and the Twin Cities Beer Festival takes the Mall of America by storm this Week in Food.
8/7 Be one of the first folks to sample Town Hall's newest brew, MPLS (Minneapolis Pale Lager Style), when it is released Tuesday at 5 p.m. This thirst-quenching beer will be available for just $2.50 a pint from 5 to 6 p.m., the perfect way to cheaply wet your whistle with this newcomer.
8/9 It isn't summer without a classic mozzarella, tomato, and basil salad, and Mississippi Market helps you take it up a notch with its Learn to Pull Fresh Mozzarella class. That's right, you can make your own mozzarella from curd with the help of the market's cheese experts. Learn the process from start to finish and then take home plenty of cheese for those salads. The class runs 6-7 p.m. and costs $15 for co-op members, $18 for nonmembers. To sign up, visit the Mississippi Market's website here.
8/10 Do some "thyme" traveling at today's Journey Through Thyme herb symposium at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. The Minnesota Herb Society's annual symposium runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features international herb experts who will immerse participants in the pleasures of herbs through cooking demonstrations and tastings, presentations, great conversation, book signings, and wonderful food. The event fee is $45 for Arboretum and Herb Society members and $60 for non-members (includes all sessions, lunch, admission to the Arboretum, and extras, such as a goodie bag). To get your ticket, visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's website here.
8/11 Saturday marks Julia Child's 100th birthday, which the Red Balloon Bookshop plans to celebrate in style. Visitors to the store will hear stories of everyone's favorite French chef via local Julia Child personality Thomas Larson while enjoying refreshments provided by Salut Bar Americain. You can also paw through stacks of cookbooks for children and adults. The fun begins at 10:30 a.m., so bring your appetite for all things Francais.
The Minneapolis Beer Fest has been reborn this year as the Twin Cities Beer Fest (more inclusive?) and promises samplings of hundreds of beers and unlimited pours. You'll also find food trucks, games, live music, and even some competitive eating. Intrigued? Then get thee to the old Met Stadium parking lot at the Mall of America to take part from 3 to 7 p.m. All proceeds from the event benefit the Finnegans Community Fund. Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the "door."
