Barrio Truck brings burritos and more to downtown Minneapolis
Last year the Barrio Truck was spotted a few times at festivals and such, but this season it's out on a more regular basis at a more permanent location in downtown Minneapolis.
Barrio Taco Truck is in its second full week this season, camped out in Smack Shack's former spot in the parking lot at Fourth Street and First Avenue North. The black behemoth is serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week, with extended hours during Twins games.
Tasty soft shell crab tacos.
The Barrio truck offers a short list of tacos found at the bricks-and-mortar restaurants (carnitas, lengua), plus several wheels-only exclusives, including a beef barbacoa burrito, soft shell crab torta, and a Mexican-style hot dog that draws inspiration, according to the guy taking orders in the window, from authentic south-of-the-border street food. It's a sort of Latin riff on a chili dog: all natural beef hot dog served with bacon, beans, roasted poblano peppers, pico de gallo, and mustard. An order of chips and salsa or guacamole can be washed down with bottled Jarritos sodas and cans of Tab.
The soft shell crab taco pictured above, another truck exclusive, is a nice alternative to the restaurants' signature Tecate-battered mahi mahi. The crab adds a pleasantly crunchy texture to a pair of soft corn tortillas, and the spicy rub on the crustacean is cooled by a blend of watercress, a sweet, watermelon-tomatillo pico de gallo, and avocado cream.
