Barbecue, brews, and farmers markets this Week in Food
One fist for beer, the other for barbecue
We've already had a taste of the hot and sticky weather, so bring on the summer food events like the return of the Kingfield Farmers Market and the appropriately named Brew-B-Que, hosted by Lift Bridge Brewery in Stillwater this Week in Food.
5/22 Community ed is a wealth of great and affordable cooking classes, just like "The Lighter Side of Asian Cooking," which takes place Tuesday night at Northeast Middle School from 6 to 9 p.m. This one-off class promises to help students discover great methods of Asian cooking and learn how Chinese traditions can help you gain insight in how food can shape cultural ideas. All for just an $18 class fee and $10 materials fee. Sign up online and you're good to go.
5/23 The Foundation Fighting Blindness, a national nonprofit focused on sight-saving research, will host a unique sensory experience: Dining in the Dark. Diners will wear light-blocking blindfolds and eat their meal using their heightened senses of taste, touch, smell, and sound to discern what's on the plate. The meal, which costs $250 per person, begins at 7 p.m. at the Marquette Hotel in downtown Minneapolis.
5/24 Curious about a raw food diet? Mississippi Market offers "Maximize Nutrition with Raw Food," a class dedicated to why you should be eating raw foods and how to prepare them. In this class students will make vegan sushi and Asian salad, (yep, you get to eat it) and find out what they've been missing in the non-raw world. The class runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and costs $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers. Sign up here.
5/26 Nothing goes better with beer than barbecue, and the St. Croix Valley Brew-B-Que marries the two thanks to a collaboration between Croix Valley Sauces, Heritage LIquor, and LIft Bridge Brewing Co. Visitors to the Lift Bridge HQ can enjoy craft beers and a BBQ competition featuring local businesses. And that's not all: chicken races, games, bands, a dunk tank, and heaps of food and beer will be on hand to add to the fun. You must be 21 to attend (bring your valid ID) and pay $20 (which you can do right here and now) to attend this event, which runs 3-8 p.m.
Fresh veg and Chef Shack mini-ds await
5/27 For the 12th year in a row the Kingfield Farmers Market returns with loads of great vendors (Sweetland Orchard, Gardens of Eagan, and Vang's Fresh Flowers, to name a few) and ready-to-eat options like the Chef Shack and Gai Gai Thai. Come down and do a lap between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
