Author Gabrielle Hamilton and the Surly Mild release this week in food
January ends with a Week in Food that begins at the library and ends in a steaming pot of homemade chili. Sounds about right to us.
1/31 Talk of the Stacks at the Minneapolis Central Library welcomes author and chef Gabrielle Hamilton to discuss her memoir Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef. Hamilton is the chef and owner of New York City's Prune restaurant and also has an MFA in fiction from the University of Michigan. Her work has appeared in Bon Appetit, The New York Times, and The New Yorker among other places. Learn about her unconventional path to cooking at this free event. Doors open at 6:15 and the program begins at 7 p.m.
At a loss for what to make the family for dinner? Chef Kate Moore will demonstrate her model of community eating in an economically sustainable way at the Linden Hills Co-op tonight. This participatory class will encourage you to feed your loved ones in true family-style fashion. At the end of the class, which costs $23 members and $25 nonmembers, you'll get to sit down and nosh on the fruits of your labor. Class runs from 6-8 p.m. To sign up call 612-922-1159.
2/2 On the first Thursday of every month Gather offers a specialty cocktail menu and a guest chef preparing unique small plates as part of a sampler series. Tonight the honor goes to James Beard winner Tim McKee, the executive chef of La Belle Vie. The featured happy hour drink for tonight's tastingt is Spoon Fed, a mix of Bombay Sapphire, blood orange, cherry, sage and fresh lemon juice created by mixologist Josh Riegert. The event runs from 5-9 p.m.

Bottomless bowls of chili get your Superbowl Sunday started right
2/5 It's winter, it's Minnesota -- it's chili making time. Superbowl Sunday is the day of Town Hall's 7th annual chili cook-off, which begins at 2:30 p.m. and ends in enough time for you to enjoy the big game. For $8 you get a bottomless bowl to enjoy plus a pint of house-brewed beer. Those who want to enter must sign up in advance and bring their chili to Town Hall by noon. The prizes are big: first place gets a $250 Town Hall gift card, and second place gets a $100 gift card.
