Recently, while meandering through Uptown, we decided to swing into Social House, on the corner of Hennepin Avenue and Lagoon, to check out its late-night happy hour. Here's what we found:
Venue: The dark nightclub-inspired restaurant offers a variety of Asian fusion that mostly grabs from Japanese influence. You'll find a bacon cheeseburger, egg rolls, a laundry list of sushi, and kung pao chicken.
We sampled a few sushi rolls and one of the small-plate selections. The spicy tuna roll was relatively standard and seemingly shy on the spicy portion of it's title. The Karaage Roll is a theoretically nice combination of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, and cream cheese, all deep-fried and topped with spicy mayo, eel sauce, green onion, and masago. Yes, this roll is essentially insane. Our roll also came a bit oversauced, which buried the flavors of the delicate fish. The upside to the sushi is that it's essentially the best deal during the Social House happy hour. The Tier One maki (the selection of rolls available for happy hour) average $5 to $15 normally, so at half price you're getting a pretty good deal, even if the sushi isn't quite on par with some of the other sushi bars in town.
The Korean tacos were definitely tasty, and I think I figured out where the spice from the tuna roll went. The tacos are marinated in a traditional soy-based marinade and come topped with red onion, relish, and cabbage slaw and are served with a side of Korean BBQ sauce. Packed with a good amount of heat, these little beef tacos are a great summertime snack that wash down well with a cold glass of beer
Verdict: The Social House is a good place to grab a happy hour snack in Uptown, mostly because the prices are right. The execution on the sushi was moderately underwhelming, but if you're just looking to catch a quick snack and drink, it's well worth the price.
