A Grand Old Day guide to the best eats
If you're planning to join a few thousand of your closest friends for Grand Old Day in St. Paul on Sunday, food will no doubt be a big part of the experience. You'll find the ubiquitous corn dogs and cheese curds, of course, but for foodies looking for something a bit more interesting, here's where the action will be.
Here are some of the most promising food booths you'll find on Sunday, from east to west. Most places will be accepting food tickets only, instead of cash, which you'll need to buy at nearby kiosks.
Holy Land: The Middle Eastern deli will be set up at two locations to dispense baklava; falafel, gyro, and chicken gyro sandwiches; sampler trays of tabouli or hummus; and stuffed grape leaves on a stick. (Located between St. Albans and Grotto and between Oxford and Lexington)
Grand Ole Creamery: The wildly popular ice cream store will also have two booths, selling its famous ice cream, plus pizza. Even on a normal day lines are out the door, so be prepared for a wait. (Between Grotto and Avon and just west of Lexington)
Brasa: Everyone's go-to spot for slow-roasted meats and Southern-style sides will be offering something a bit different on Sunday: macaroni-and-cheese fritters, s'mores, and chips with guacamole. (Between Grotto and Avon)
Punch Pizza: No need for the subpar fair-quality pizzas you might find elsewhere. Look for Punch's upscale, Neapolitan-style pies by the slice. (Between Grotto and Avon)
El Burrito Mercado: If you're in the mood for Mexican, they'll be selling tamales, burritos, and churros at two locations. (Between Avon and Victoria and between Oxford and Lexington)
Pizza Luce: You can't go wrong with Luce's pizza by the slice (between Victoria and Milton)
Everest on Grand: For something a bit more exotic than the usual street food, try this Nepali and Tibetan restaurant across from Kowalski's, which will be selling veggie and chicken momo (steamed dumplings), samosas, spicy chicken wings, aalooko sabji (a spicy potato dish), and a spicy chai tea called Chiya. (Between Ayd Mill and Syndicate)
Cold Stone Creamery: It should be in the 80s on Sunday. You'll need ice cream cups. (Between Ayd Mill and Syndicate)
Kyber Pass Café: At the far western end of the Grand festivities you'll find what may be the best deal of all: plates of this Afghani restaurant's kebabs (chicken, beef, lamb, veggie), rice, lentils, salad and hummus with bread and chutneys. (Between Saratoga and Snelling)
