As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2013, coming April 17, the Hot Dish is serving up 50 of our favorite local dishes.

It seemed like we'd hit the cupcake threshold. There's only so much adorable sweetness we can handle before the palate rebels and begs for an acid-rain salt bath. Cupcakes were everywhere, and we needed a break. When the new food truck A Cupcake Social rolled into town, it seemed like it was missing the end of a fading fad. And then we tasted the cupcakes.

The key to the cakes from A Cupcake Social is that they are sweet without being saccharine. They're adorable without ever being cutesy. The flavors are creative without asking us to take a chance on something that looks like a Top Chef reject. These ladies understand why the cupcake was once king. They are setting about returning the maligned mini-dessert to its rightful place at the top of the dessert food pyramid.

The dulce de leche cupcake's tender white cake is stuffed with milky caramel spiked with a welcome hit of salt. It's sweet, creamy, tender, and perfectly sized for a two-bite finish. The frosting smears across your top lip as the caramel sauce oozes out of the heart of your little hand-held dessert, clinging to the cupcake and then your chin.
