Before there was a notion to dine out every time a hunger pang reared its head, there was dining out for special occasions and for luxury.
And for this, there is none better than a classic steakhouse.
The formula is down pat: white linen that stands up crisp with starch, courtly barmen with a gift for gab, a fine touch with the dimmer switch and the sort of menu to induce the declaration: "Honey, bust out that Platinum card, 'cause mama's hungry."
Unlike certain other cravings, and despite what the vegans may say, there is only one way to assuage a meat lust, and that is by having some. Sensible people will note that a reasonable portion of meat is the size of a deck of cards. But doing things sensibly in a steakhouse will not get one very far.
The Delmonico steak takes its name from a 19th century New York City restaurant of the same name that made the cut famous.
Here it is a 22-ounce bone-in ribeye that issues forth a challenge upon the plate, splaying out over every inch of it like a cocky dude doing a manspread on a subway seat; as if to say: "I dare you."
Take the whole thing down like a real woman, and behold as a slab of cheesecake the size of your head challenges you similarly for dessert.
