Comfort food exists in all shapes and sizes -- be it a Jack's frozen pizza, a hearty plate of mashed potatoes and gravy, or maybe a big steaming bowl of matzo ball soup. And we believe that there are few things in life more comforting, more satisfying, than a giant plate of sesame chicken. So we took it upon ourselves to find the best place to get this comfort staple.
We've had plenty of opportunities to test this Asian restaurant classic throughout the Twin Cities (after all, there's always bad weather or lost jobs or bad boyfriends and dammit, sesame chicken is the only thing that can heal those wounds). We've sampled some of the lesser iterations, where ketchup was the main sauce ingredient, and we've had experiences that made us question what grade of chicken was used (tendons, fatty bits, and gray parts do not a comfort food make).
So when we arrived at Pho 79/Caravelle (the restaurant is one part Vietnamese, one part Chinese), we didn't quite know what to expect. When you enter the restaurant, to your left you will typically see a busy dining room with plenty of folks slurping down large bowls of fragrant pho. The right side of the restaurant (which we can only assume is the Caravelle side) is where you order the letter M -- Crispy Sesame Chicken in a hot and spicy sauce.
For a meager $7.79, a veritable feast of sweet, crispy, deep-fried white meat fritters lay upon a nest of simple fried rice. Each bite is a flavor explosion, with the sweet honey-like coating, savory moist chicken, a little spice, and of course a few sesame seeds to top it off. We know that the idea of "crispy chicken doughnuts" may not sound that appealing, but we assure you that this meal is dinner and dessert in one completely satisfying package. To top it off, an egg roll accompanies the combination, but we suggest you save that for later and focus on what really matters.
Boss wrongfully take credit for a successful project? Locked yourself out of your car? Maybe it's just -30 degrees. The next time you need a little comfort, drive on over to Eat Street and fill that void with the letter M.
